Maury Student Art Exhibition on View at Hill Center (and other extremely exciting updates)!!

Layout 1

As many of you already know, our 4th and 5th grade students studied the Pop Art of Andy Warhol this fall and took inspiration from our school-wide food drive to create their own designs for eye-catching packaging in the Warhol style. Their designs highlighted a nutritional fun fact to help recipients of the donated food know what to look for when planning a healthy diet.

I am beyond proud to announce that with the tremendous help of our dear Elizabeth Nelson, we were able to secure a most wonderful location to display our student’s work! The HillCenter (aka Old Naval Hospital) at 921 Pennsylvania Ave SE agreed to stage a show of these works in conjunction with a larger, juried show already scheduled. The entire Maury family is invited to the opening reception on Wednesday, March 19 from 6-8 p.m.  I hope – and the HillCenter folks hope – that we will have a great turnout for this special occasion.  If you are unable to make it out for the reception, you can always stop by any time during gallery hours (listed on attached postcard) to view all art on display.  Maury’s work is hanging in a corridor on the ground floor, on the eastern side of the building.

Please help me give huge thanks to Nicky Cymrot andBarbara Bonessa of the HillCenter for making this prestigious show possible for our Maury artists. I would be crazy not to sing the praises of our very own Beth Doughtery (friend, mother of Maury 4th and 1st graders and fantastic local artist) and the invaluable Elizabeth Nelson for stepping in and hanging the show last Thursday.  This opportunity would not have been possible without all of  their time and support this past week. Also, a huge shout out to Alan Braley who designed our super cool digital postcard and Maggie Myszka, marketing and communications manager at HillCenter! You guys are pros!

In other exciting and blog worthy news, my husband Jeff and I recently purchased our very first home in the Trinidad neighborhood and moved in this very weekend! We are ecstatic about (finally) becoming permanent DC residents and planting even stronger roots in a community that we love and feel so loved by. You all are the reason we feel confident in choosing Maury and the surrounding community to build our future, careers, and (one day, not this very moment, people) family.

And for the last epic announcement of the morning, how about those Cougars? In case you haven’t heard yet, the Maury Ski Team took home the Championship on Friday in the DCIAA Elementary School Division!

The school champions were determined by taking the average times of all TEN team members after three runs down steep terrain and through official racing gates. Every Maury racer contributed to our success on the mountain yesterday and Mrs. Cooper and I couldn’t be more proud of our student’s athleticism, sportsmanship, and team spirit. Coaching this group of respectful, hilarious, and competitive students alongside Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Mitchell and Ernie Franklin this winter has been one of the highlights of my time here at Maury.

But it doesn’t end there. In addition to winning the team competition at Liberty Mountain, Maury swept the individual competition as well. Fourth grader, Julian Gutierrez took home first place in the advanced category, followed by fourth graders Martin Michaels placing second, and Dani Michaels placing third. These kids are speed demons!

Firth grader, Isaac Smoker, held it down for Maury by placing  in the Intermediate category while  firth grader Shaun Robinson took home gold in the Beginner competition. Marquette Ellis (5th) as well as Caden Kowalski (4th), and Stella Drager (4th) also medaled in the Beginner competition. Taleyah Evans and Samantha Garcia also competed fiercely in the championships and helped contribute to our team victory on the slopes!

Although I am loving this nod to springtime with temperatures in the mid sixties, I am sad to see the winter season go. The snow has been good to us skiers and Liberty Mountain has been most gracious hosts, per usual. I’ll be gearing up for next year and anticipating another successful ski season where the Cougars go for gold and put their skills to the test as they strive to defend their championship!
